Action

The National Organisation for Women in Sport Physical Activity and Recreation (NOWSPAR) is a Zambian organisation that advocates for women’s rights to and through sport. This women led organisation undertakes work ranging from practical support to community sports groups to enable them deliver sport programmes for girls and facilitating increased gender awareness within the sports sector, to lobbying the government to implement policies that will have a positive impact on sport and women’s access. I am Executive Director of NOWSPAR.

Purple Cactus Book Club – The Purple Cactus Book Club is a community project I set up to facilitate book sharing. The Book Club is free and enables community members, children and youths, to borrow books to read. During pre-Covid19 times, the Book Club opened at weekends (Saturday and Sunday Afternoons), members would sit and read, or pick up and return books.

In view of Covid 19, we’ve postponed our meet ups, we will start again as soon as it is safe to do so. When we closed, we gave out all the books to the children to read during the lock down. For now we are collecting more books so that we can get more books to them as this lock down may take a while. Young people are keen readers, so we are always in need of more books. We welcome books on a variety of topics, reading levels, and genres. So, if by any chance during this lockdown, you have the energy to check your shelves and storage for some of the books you can spare, we would love to receive them when it is safe for you to mail them.

Thank you for your contribution to this joy project that brings pleasure and world expansion to children.

The Anita White Foundation (AWF) is a Charity based at the University of Chichester. The AWF aims to be a central point of reference for activists and scholars and supports women sport leaders from countries that face particular challenges. The AWF runs an Archive on the Women and Sport Movement and a Fund to support leadership development. As an AWF Adviser and Scholar, I support the AWF as a member of the Strategy Group and with delivery of three primary initiatives: the Women’s Sport Leadership Academy, Catalyst Grant, and the Celia Brackenridge International Research Award.

Football Rising is an international initiative we are developing that is driven by the mission “to unite, invest in and amplify female athletes and leaders in marginalised and non-FIFA football regions to realise their full potential. We want girls and women to be exceptional and inspirational on and off the field.”

Nothing that we do that is worthwhile is done alone.” — Mariame Kaba
